Architecture Overview:

Phase 1 construction included 72-bed, 15,900 square foot residential living space consisting of nine connected living units, each includes 4 double sleeping rooms, toilets/showers, shared washer/dryer, kitchenette, and common living room space. Phase 2 added an additional 48 beds in similar living unit arrangements. The "Pods" achieved one of the first in the state LEED Gold Certifications.

Engineering Overview:

This residential dormitory building and addition contains three floors consisting of a pod concept for living arrangement. Each pod incorporates a living room, sleeping rooms, bathrooms and a small service area. The students have access to real time electrical energy consumption of the individual pods. This was incorporated into the control system to encourage competition among residents to reduce energy consumption. Several sustainable design features were analyzed and implemented including photovoltaic panels mounted on the roof of a bike shelter, a solar domestic water heating system to supplement the existing system and a heat recovery unit to provide ventilation air to the individual spaces. The building achieved a LEED Gold Certification for sustainable design.
