Montclair State University Student Recreation Center

Montclair, NJ

Services provided on this project:

Architecture Overview:

This open and welcoming Student Recreation Center maximizes design intents: student views into the building, views of the exterior from inside, interior openness and views of activity areas, social environment, and zoning for simultaneous use. Large expanses of glass provide dynamic views into the Cardio Fitness Area. Views to the Manhattan skyline are provided from the first floor Cardio/Weights Area, the second floor Cardio Area, the Juice Bar, and the Jog/Walk Track. The entrance provides a flood of views to activity areas. Clearly designed to echo the Spanish Mission style, the building's structural forms and large amounts of glass offer a distinct and dynamic image, and provide visual clues to the activities housed inside.

Landscape Architecture Overview:

As part of the overall Montclair State University Recreation Center project, the site improvements for the Recreation Center provided several challenges that resulted in a strong, elegant design solution. The extensive topography of the site, with its bedrock bluff, created a dramatic setting for the recreation center as it look out towards Manhattan. The topography allowed for a grand site staircase leading into the entry courtyard, designed in a classical style, lending itself to the existing campus aesthetic. The building is sited to relate to campus pedestrian movement with the main entrance on the SW corner of the building. A significant open space links the major north-south pedestrian way with the building entrance providing valuable outdoor gathering space for students utilizing the facility. A bus drop off also provides direct access to the main entrance.
