Principal Park Clubhouse Expansion

Des Moines, IA

Architecture Overview:

The team facilities at Principal Park had not been updated since the original facility was added in 1981. RDG was hired to plan for the most efficient way(s) to expand and reuse space, as well as provide updated clubhouse amenities that would rank the new facility at the top of minor league (triple-A) baseball. The planning study for the facility proved that the needs of the Iowa Cubs could not be met within the confines of the existing building. The north wall of the existing clubhouse was partially removed to add players' locker space that meets the flexible functional requirements of modern professional baseball teams. The visiting coach's lockers were expanded and reorganized to better accommodate larger coaching staffs. Athletes and training staff enjoy a strength and conditioning area that is 50% larger than before, allowing more personalized training programs. The design team took advantage of additional exterior rooftop plaza space, allowing the Iowa Cubs organization to expand pre and post-game activities.
