Architecture Overview:

A renovation of the country's first YMCA building on U.S. Army property, this project creates a world class fitness center for civilians and enlisted personnel at Fort Monroe. Patrons appreciate the way the 1907 building retains its historic character while providing an ideal setting for modern fitness equipment and facilities. The Charette decision-making process led to a design that provides four separate weight and fitness areas, maximum use of natural light, and state-of-the-art (yet practical) facilities. Close work with the local historical preservation office helped ensure a design concept that salvages and/or rebuilds many of the building's original historical elements.
