Art Studio Overview:
RDG Dahlquist Art Studio, in conjunction with "Wright on the Park," was commissioned to restore the largest ornamental urn ever designed by architect, Frank Lloyd Wright. The monumental form is cast in color impregnated glass-fiber reinforced concrete (GFRC). At over six feet square, it is an exact re-creation of one included on the exterior of the Park Inn Hotel, part of a major architectural restoration and now returned to Wright's only surviving hotel design. The Park Inn Hotel is part of a major urban revitalization project for Federal Avenue streetscape and plaza in the center of Mason City, Iowa. A strong public involvement process strategy was the cornerstone of this project. Design work sessions, broken into large and small group meetings and individual property and business owners' discussions, allowed any members of the community with interest to be involved in and influence concept development and preliminary design. Additionally, a project website provided an avenue for input and comments on specific concepts and overall project priorities. Based on this extensive process, the team developed a design that takes cues from turn-of-the-century catenary lighting, and the rich cultural foundation that exists within the community. The integration of artistic, hand-crafted elements plays an instrumental role in recalling the grandeur of Federal Avenue and its significant architectural past.
