Marshalltown Community Schools - Roundhouse Renovation

Marshalltown, IA

Services provided on this project:

Architecture Overview:

Starting in early 2012, RDG began an extensive master planning effort which evaluated all potential programmatic and functional user group desires related to physical education, competitive athletic, recreational and support functions for the unique, existing Marshalltown Community School District's "Round House" gymnasium, now and into the foreseeable future. The design adds and improves many functional and educational aspects and the proposed improvements pay rightful respect to the existing history and powerful image of the existing "Round House." Particular attention was paid to the style and scale of the new additions with the goal of "highlighting" and "featuring" the major attributes of the Round House. The building additions will communicate the district's quest to stay competitive and current with a prideful balance that highlights Marshalltown's historical success and community contribution. The interior will be renovated and modernized, while the addition will host a hall of pride for Marshalltown Athletics, a new locker room, a stunning new main entrance, and a new space for the Athletic Director.

Engineering Overview:

This project consisted of the renovation and addition to an iconic 15,000sf high school athletic roundhouse. The addition consisted of 14,500sf of Fitness, Weight Training, Hall of Pride, and Athletic offices. Renovation included adding a new 200 ton air cooled chiller and multiple air handlers to serve the existing fieldhouse, additions, and support spaces. New HVAC controls, lighting, lighting controls, and new plumbing systems were also provided to complete the renovation.
