Interior Design Overview:

Looking to create something wholly unique within their portfolio, The Riverwood Group engaged RDG to design a new senior living community in Durham, New Hampshire. The resulting design for the RiverWoods Durham Continuing Care Retirement Community is one that supports a lifestyle rich in social connection and physical and mental well-being. RDG’s process began by engaging with prospective residents to share concepts and seek feedback. One critical outcome of these conversations was the integration of a traditional library, the space for which had originally been planned as a coffee shop, and that today exists as a vibrant space run by volunteers, with a continuously growing collection of books and resources. A large area on the second floor is broken down into smaller, intimate spaces using ceiling, flooring and other finish transitions, providing a variety of formal, casual, grab-and-go and private dining areas that encourage residents to socialize before and after meals. Drawing inspiration from the local rustic landscape, RDG’s interior design incorporates natural materials throughout, using stone and wood elements to evoke a hand-crafted, homey yet modern feel. The 355,634-SF community consists of 150 independent living apartments as well as a 72-bed health center that encompasses assisted living, memory care and skilled nursing units. Resident amenities, which are designed to accommodate an active and healthy lifestyle and encourage interaction and engagement, include a creative art studio, multiple dining options, a coffee bar and hearth room, multi-modal fitness center and a full-service salon.
