Community Planning Overview:
The Topeka Bikeways Master Plan incorporates bicycle transportation into Topeka’s overall access network. While the plan addresses trails and other off-road pathways, its focus is a destination-based system, including the development of bicycle boulevards, strategic gap-filling trail segments, bike lanes, and wayfinding. In 2013, the $1.4 million first phase of the system was completed. Since then, the program has displayed remarkable results, producing significant increases in both bicycle and pedestrian transportation. Notable is a pronounced shift in commuters from the city’s signature Shunga Trail to city streets, and a consequent increase in the number of pedestrians using the trail. The second phase of this popular system was implemented in 2018.
