Planning Group Receives APA Award for Downtown Lexington Plan

At the Nebraska American Planning Association Conference, RDG Planning & Design was recognized with the Excellence in Planning for Best Practice Award for the Lexington, Neb. Downtown Revitalization Plan.

The Downtown Lexington planning project was a challenge for the planning team due to its limited budget and timeline for completion. It compressed a 10-month schedule into less than three months in order for the city to become eligible for a $350,000 grant from the Nebraska Department of Economic Development. Despite the intense schedule, the plan had a substantial public involvement process that included a bilingual survey, regular steering committee meetings, focus groups, design studio and presentations to civic organizations.

Project elements included:

·         Market analysis

·         Downtown Today section

·         Strategic planning

·         Development Plan

·         Implementation element

Key issues included:

·         Future development

·         Parking

·         Façade improvements

·         Building reuse

·         Infill

·         Streetscape

·         Housing opportunities

The Downtown Revitalization Plan for Lexington, developed with the help and participation of many people, is now a defining guide for the development and enhancement of downtown Lexington.
