FOUR Landscape Architectural Design Awards

Design excellence is recognized with four awards from the Great Plains Chapter of the American Society of Landscape Architects (ASLA) during the annual September conference.

RDG receives a Merit Award in the design built category for Papillion Downtown Plaza, in Papillion, Nebraska; a Merit Award in the planning category for the La Vista Civic Center Park Master Plan, in La Vista, Nebraska and a Merit Award in the planning category for the South Kansas Avenue Streetscape Master Plan in Topeka, Kansas. RDG is also honored with a President’s Award of Excellence related to their work on 14th Street-Warlick – Old Cheney Road Intersection Improvements.
Merit award recipient, The Papillion Downtown Plaza transforms a vacant parking lot into a dynamic outdoor community venue. The Plaza contains two fountains that evoke the Papillion Creek located adjacent to the south side of the site. A restroom building is designed to incorporate a viewing area on the roof for parade judging. Brick paving repeats elements of the existing downtown streetscape pattern and color concrete paving mimics the braided channels of historic creeks. Sustainable practices are achieved through collecting the stormwater runoff from the roof canopy and depositing into a raingarden located along Washington Street.

The La Vista Civic Center Park Master Plan and South Kansas Avenue Streetscape Master Plan each receive Merit Awards in the planning category. La Vista Civic Center Park is a 56-acre park master plan for an existing nine-hole golf course that acts as a catalyst for community identity, growth and redevelopment. This park plan focuses on water access and trail facilities, while highlighting the natural and biological processes which make the site so important. South Kansas Avenue is considered the “Main Street” in Downtown Topeka, a wide boulevard that once was the vibrant center to retail and entertainment for all of Topeka. As part of a new emphasis on their downtown RDG and a team of local design professionals are working with the community to create a new image for this corridor that will be a catalyst for growth and economic development.
14th Street-Warlick – Old Cheney Road Intersection Improvements, a recipient of the President’s Award of Excellence is focused on creating a memorable gateway into Southwest Lincoln while improving the pedestrian and bicycle connections and applying sustainable principles to the overall design.
