UNCG Kaplan Center is LEED Gold Certified!!
The Leonard J. Kaplan Center for Wellness, is helping the University of North Carolina Greensboro (UNCG) usher in a new era of recreation and wellness on campus focused on lifelong well-being for the overall UNCG community. They’re also very committed to practicing sustainable methods and being good stewards of their environment and the Kaplan Center capitalizes on those objectives in design and function.
The new, 216,000-square-foot facility, part of UNCG’s master plan for growth along W. Gate City Boulevard, features more than 20,000 square feet of weight and fitness space, seven basketball courts, lap and activity pools and a 54-foot climbing wall, among other wellness spaces and classrooms. The “main concourse” that internally connects all of the spaces on each level is open from floor to floor to provide views across the facility from level to level. Clerestory windows and taller roof over this area brings desired natural light into this internal space.
The Kaplan Center is helping the University achieve an important sustainable objective –promising to make a big impact by reducing the university’s energy and water usage and investing in local sustainability initiatives. This facility is most recently recognized for meeting the requirements to be Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) Gold Certified, a status determined by “points” awarded for environmental consideration in design and human impact awareness. Contributing design factors focused on being energy efficient within the building and the site. Utilizing large amounts of natural lighting, low-flow water in restrooms, energy-efficient lighting, and a bioretention field behind the gym.
The Center is located on five and one-half acre city block, occupied mostly by the new building. A dedicated portion of the site’s southern edge creates a landscape buffer to soften views and scale from existing residential neighborhoods south of Haywood Street. A series of Bio-Retention Cells in this area provide storm water treatment and peak discharge attenuation. Rainwater is managed in lawn basins, rain gardens, and collection areas, which allow the sediment to collect and remain on-site before the water is “given up” to the city. The detailing around these systems is beautiful, and they enhance the spaces around our building.
