RDG In the Media: The Historic Hotel Maytag Featured in Retrofit Magazine

RDG Planning & Design Senior Partner and Architect Matt Coen, AIA explores the combined efforts to transform the Hotel Maytag from worn-out to wonderful and restore a unique piece of Newton, Iowa’s history.

Originally designed by Chicago architect Henry Raeder and constructed by Frederick Louis Maytag in 1926, Hotel Maytag was both innovative and luxurious for its time. The building served as Newton, Iowa’s main event hub until the mid-1960s when its main ballroom closed and its interior spaces were chopped up to create apartments, offices and commercial spaces. Over the next several decades the structure would undergo multiple ownership changes and continue to decline until, in 2017, rehabilitation and renovation efforts began in earnest.
