Derby has created 25 miles of bike paths over the past 15 years. Next, the City is beginning the process to create a Walkable Development Plan to identify ways to reduce dependence on automobiles by reducing barriers and creating opportunities for active transportation. The plan will help facilitate the creation of mixed-use centers that enhance the overall user experience. The planning process will:
- Identify areas of opportunity and barriers to walking in Derby to develop design criteria
- Provide recommendations to revise existing land development regulations to allow for walkable land development and redevelopment
- Create walkable development guidelines that graphically show street design standards, streetscape amenities, sidewalk/crossing standards, and associated elements
- Recommend priority projects to promote walkability, with cost estimates for future capital improvement programming
With input from the public, implementation of the plan will strive to:
- Reduce the reliance on automobiles
- Promote safe, enjoyable, and convenient transportation options for all roadway users
- Provide sidewalk connections and streetscape amenities that promote multi‐modal transportation
- Reduce the number of vehicle trips, thereby also reducing emissions and improving air quality
- Meet Derby’s Comprehensive Plan goal of designing new neighborhoods with interconnected networks of multimodal friendly and attractively landscaped streets, trails, and sidewalks
The City needs your help to identify barriers, opportunities, and priorities for active transportation in Derby. There are three open house events and two surveys planned throughout the process. Your participation is essential to ensure we understand the area and meet the needs of the community. Check back on the “Home” page for project updates and meeting announcements.
