Groundbreaking Marks Next Phase for University Place Campus
The independent living expansion, designed by RDG, introduces new residences, amenities and gathering spaces to support connection and well-being.
Franciscan Ministries celebrated a groundbreaking on Tuesday, September 29, 2026, marking the start of an expansion and renovation at University Place, its senior living community in West Lafayette, Indiana. Designed by RDG Planning & Design, the project adds 62 independent living residences and renovates existing independent living corridors and shared amenities, creating a renewed environment that simultaneously honors the campus’s architectural character and responds to residents’ evolving needs.
Rooted in University Place’s legacy of service and scholarship, RDG’s design draws inspiration from the nearby Purdue University campus and Franciscan Ministries’ philosophy of “Living Joyfully.” A “Collegiate Contemporary” design concept builds on the campus’s existing stone, stained glass and rich wood details and introduces brighter materials as part of a playful color palette. Together, these elements create spaces that feel familiar yet fresh and support connection, wellness and everyday moments of joy.
In addition to the 62 new residences, the project introduces an elevated dining venue, a new bar and bistro, expanded community gathering spaces and enhanced wellness amenities, including a pool and fitness center. The bar and bistro will serve as a social hub, while flexible gathering areas are designed to accommodate everything from quiet reflection to social programming and celebrations.
Connections to nature and community are woven throughout the design, with expanded dining and wellness spaces that open onto an outdoor courtyard. Birds, sunbursts and woven patterns appear throughout the finishes and artwork, reflecting themes of connection, renewal and shared experience. Guided by Franciscan Ministries’ stewardship values and the principles of Laudato Si’ (a global mission to inspire and mobilize the Catholic community to achieve climate and ecological justice), University Place incorporates low- and no-VOC materials, recycled content and energy-efficient systems. The project is set to be completed in 2028.
