With a career dedicated to community involvement, mentorship and meaningful design, Sova’s contributions have left a lasting impact on Nebraska’s architectural landscape and beyond.

RDG Planning & Design is proud to announce that John Sova, AIA, has been awarded the Harry F. Cunningham Gold Medal, the most prestigious honor granted by AIA Nebraska. Named in memory of architect Harry Francis Cunningham, who led the iconic completion of Nebraska's State Capitol and founded the University of Nebraska-Lincoln's School of Architecture, this Gold Medal celebrates those whose work embodies Cunningham's dedication to architectural excellence and civic commitment. Established in 1995, the Cunningham Gold Medal is awarded in recognition of an individual's distinguished achievements in architecture or enduring service to the profession. Sova joined his family and representatives from RDG to formally accept and celebrate the award at AIA Nebraska's Design Gala on Friday, November 15, 2024.

With a career spanning more than 45 years, Sova has contributed profoundly to Nebraska's architectural landscape and championed the value of meaningful design that enriches communities. His unwavering commitment to local projects and civic leadership has left an indelible mark on the state and inspired generations within the architectural field. Sova joined RDG in 1981, embarking on a journey to become a central figure in the firm's development. Throughout his tenure, he has held pivotal roles as project architect, project director, principal-in-charge, and, most recently, managing principal and president. His leadership has been instrumental in growing RDG from a small local firm into a nationally recognized practice with more than 225 employees and a distinguished portfolio that includes projects across 48 states.

John Sova, holding his Cunningham Gold Medal, celebrates alongside RDG employees and Brother William Woeger at the AIA Nebraska Gala on Friday, November 15, in Lincoln, Nebraska.

Sova's impact is particularly profound in Nebraska, where he has led transformative projects that celebrate and uplift local communities. One of his most notable works is Riverfront Place in Omaha, one of the city's first major residential developments along the Missouri River and a catalyst for urban renewal. His commitment to designing inclusive and engaging spaces has earned RDG numerous accolades and, most importantly, fostered a sense of belonging and pride among community members.

A hallmark of Sova's legacy is his contribution to worship architecture. Since helping to establish RDG's worship practice in 1989, Sova has led the design of more than 150 faith-based projects, primarily focusing on Catholic spaces in Nebraska and beyond. His work in this area has been nationally celebrated, with RDG receiving two National AIA Awards for Religious Art and Architecture. Driven by a deep respect for the unique character of each faith community, he employs a participatory design process that honors each congregation's spiritual identity. His portfolio includes award-winning projects such as St. Vincent de Paul in Omaha and Prince of Peace in Kearney, Nebraska, which draw on the historical and spiritual heritage of Nebraska's Catholic communities, and the new St. Patrick’s Catholic Church in west Omaha, RDG’s most recent worship market project set to open in mid-2025. His design philosophy emphasizes functionality and inspiration, creating spaces that elevate the worship experience.

Mentorship and Community Engagement

Beyond his design contributions, Sova has dedicated his career to fostering the next generation of architects, including through RDG's robust internship program, which draws hundreds of applicants annually. He actively seeks to nurture next-generation talent, supporting students from universities nationwide and providing them with meaningful opportunities. As a guest lecturer at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln's College of Architecture, Sova shares his expertise with emerging professionals. As a member of the college's Professional Advisory Council, he advocates for educational initiatives that equip students for successful careers in architecture.

With more than 45 years of dedication, Sova has shaped Nebraska's architectural landscape, championing meaningful design that enriches communities and inspires future generations.

Sova's commitment to community service is equally extensive. He has served in leadership positions on multiple civic boards, including for the Child Saving Institute, where he has served in a variety of leadership positions for more than 30 years. Under his guidance, RDG has reinforced its dedication to public service, a commitment that resonates with Sova's belief in the architect's role as a community steward. From the Omaha Public Schools Construction Advisory Council to the City of Omaha Downtown Improvement District Board, Sova's involvement has driven meaningful advancements in local infrastructure and quality of life.

"John's influence extends far beyond the buildings he's designed to the people he's mentored and the communities he's impacted," said RDG Principal Joe Lang, AIA. "John embodies the qualities that every architect strives for – humility, dedication and a commitment to excellence that touches everything he does. He has dedicated his life to his profession and community with the kind of quiet leadership that builds true, lasting impact. In our years working together, I have seen John uplift RDG and the architectural profession, constantly emphasizing that meaningful design can be a force for good. He shows every day what's possible when you prioritize people, quality and purpose."

A Visionary Leader in Architectural Practice

Throughout his career, Sova has navigated RDG through pivotal growth phases. In 1989, he became one of RDG's principals. Within this role, he helped guide the firm through a merger of two previously highly respected firms in Omaha and Des Moines, expanding the firm's presence and ultimately transforming RDG into a nationally prominent practice. In 2022, he was named president and one of two managing principals, overseeing RDG's strategic direction and ensuring the firm's commitment to design excellence and social responsibility. Under Sova's leadership, RDG has advanced significant projects in multiple markets, including education, public safety, sports and recreation, and worship, solidifying the firm's reputation as a leader in the design industry.

"For me, architecture is about building for the community, about creating spaces that reflect who we are and who we strive to become. It's a daily practice of empathy, integrity and innovation," said Sova. "Each project is a chance to make a difference, whether by enhancing the quality of life in our neighborhoods or fostering a sense of connection in our worship spaces. I wake up every morning with gratitude for the opportunity to do what we do: design spaces that leave a positive, lasting legacy to inspire and bring people together."

Throughout his tenure at RDG, Sova has driven the firm through pivotal milestones, including a transformative merger in 1989 that expanded RDG's reach and established it as a nationally prominent design practice. Known for his thoughtful approach to leadership and advocacy for a culture of trust and innovation, Sova has fostered an environment at RDG where creativity and excellence are celebrated.
