RDG Planning & Design has been recognized for setting new standards for innovation, sustainability and community-centered design.

Learning by Design Magazine has awarded RDG with a 2025 Grand Prize - Social Impact Award for its design for Porter-Leath Early Childhood Academy | Orange Mound. The magazine’s annual Architecture and Interior Design Awards of Excellence honor the year’s most inspiring educational facilities that not only shape the future of learning but also reaffirm the role of architecture in creating meaningful social impact.

Located in Memphis, Tennessee, Porter-Leath Early Childhood Academy at Orange Mound provides comprehensive education and support for 288 children across 18 classrooms while also serving as a teaching lab for the University of Memphis in the College of Education students. RDG's design for the Academy encourages play and exploration, and weaves local culture, history and geography into safe and inviting spaces. The use of natural light, lush landscapes and bright colors enriches children's learning opportunities.

Utilizing intentional child-friendly architecture and playgrounds, the Academy feels like an extension of home and community with unique features such as the addition of a front porch facade in each classroom, which opens into a natural playscape designed to promote play-based learning.

The fall 2025 Architectural and Interior Design Awards of Excellence entries are judged on design quality, social and cultural impact, environmental responsibility and innovation. The panel of jurors represented five professionals from various fields, including teaching, architecture, interior design and planning.
