Wilson Lofts, designed by RDG Planning & Design, has been honored for work demonstrating a commitment to historic preservation excellence.

Preservation Iowa, a local organization whose mission is to build partnerships that enhance the state’s economic and cultural future through the preservation of historic resources, honored multiple projects with Preservation at Its Best Awards during its annual Preserve Iowa Summit in early June. Recognizing individuals, organizations, projects and programs that demonstrate a commitment to historic preservation excellence, the organization presented eight awards across multiple categories, including recognition of the RDG-designed project, Wilson Lofts. The project was honored with Preservation Iowa’s “Adaptive Reuse” award, which recognizes the successful conversion of a historic structure for a new or compatible use while retaining its architectural integrity. Members of the RDG Planning & Design team joined representatives from the Economic Growth Corporation to accept the award during the summit in Mt. Pleasant, Iowa in early June.

Located in Clinton, Iowa, the Wilson Lofts project transformed the early 20th-century Wilson Buildings into a vibrant, mixed-use development. Spearheaded by the Economic Growth Corporation (GROWTH), RDG and Five Points Community Capital, the project represents a significant milestone in the revitalization of downtown Clinton and is a testament to the power of adaptive reuse, historic preservation and sustainable design in fostering vibrant urban environments. The buildings, which were once central to the city's economic activity, now embody the potential for renewal, blending historic preservation with modern sustainability to create a dynamic community space.

RDG's design preserves key historical elements, such as the original JCPenney sign and antique chifferobe, while seamlessly integrating modern amenities and sustainable design features. Wilson Lofts now boasts 33 exquisite apartments alongside two dynamic business incubators: Makers on 5th and Clinton Culinary. Beyond its architectural significance, the Wilson Lofts have catalyzed economic and social revitalization in downtown Clinton. The inclusion of residential spaces and business incubators within the development has spurred local investment and entrepreneurship, reinforcing the project's role in stimulating community engagement and pride. This underscores the broader impact of such projects in rejuvenating urban centers, creating vibrant spaces where history and innovation converge.
