In its January/February issue, Athletic Business showcases Aquatic Design Portfolio, which features the RDG-designed Waukee CSD Natatorium.

Athletic Business recently released its Aquatic Design Portfolio issue, featuring aquatic facilities with modern designs that meet community needs. Aquatic facilities today are increasingly incorporating spaces that accommodate multiple activities simultaneously, leading both to significant investment in these spaces and a growing emphasis on improved public health. The Waukee Community School District Natatorium, designed by RDG, embodies this approach and was selected to be featured on the cover.

Located in Waukee, Iowa, the Waukee CSD Natatorium is designed to serve Waukee High School, Waukee Northwest High School and the broader community in Iowa’s fastest-growing school district. Previously reliant on the Waukee YMCA, the schools’ highly successful swim programs now train and compete in a 50-meter stretch and 25-yard fast water competition pool, capable of hosting two simultaneous 25-yard, 8-lane events, alongside a 25-yard, 4-lane warm-up pool. Inspired by movement and flow, the exterior design features dynamic cladding and angled fins that subtly guide spectator circulation. Inside, intentional circulation ensures seamless navigation while maintaining separation between athletes and spectators. Natural light — uncommon in competition venues — is carefully controlled to minimize glare, enhancing both safety and the competition experience.

The Athletic Business Aquatic Design Portfolio represents the industry’s state-of-the-art facilities. The highlighted facilities include those designed for serious competition or inspired fun, indoors and out. In its 11th year, the Portfolio showcases pools in high schools, colleges, waterparks, hospitality settings and more.
