RDG in the Media: Lighting Design Transforms Des Moines Art Center
RDG Planning & Design updates I. M. Pei's iconic 1968 lighting concept with energy-efficient, flexible modern technology.
The Des Moines Art Center recently celebrated the reopening of its iconic I. M. Pei building following a series of upgrades and renovations, including a transformative new lighting system designed by RDG Planning & Design. A cornerstone of the museum’s year-long renovation efforts, the lighting upgrades revitalize the Florence Cowles Kruidenier building, blending modern technology with I. M. Pei's original 1968 vision.
RDG’s lighting team, led by David Raver, implemented a sophisticated system that enhances the visitor experience while aligning with energy efficiency and sustainability goals. Utilizing Bluetooth technology and adaptive design schemes, the new system offers museum-quality illumination tailored to highlight the Art Center’s diverse collections. Protective light filtering and flexible fixtures ensure the longevity of the displayed works while elevating their presentation.
The lighting overhaul was part of a broader effort that saw the reinstallation of more than 8,500 SF of gallery space and the introduction of new and beloved works from the museum’s permanent collection. Among the highlights are Frank Stella’s “Interlagos” and David Novros’s “Untitled,” showcased alongside newer acquisitions such as Yinka Shonibare’s “Abstract Bronze.”
