RDG in the Media: Envisioning a Hub for Youth Sports in Dubuque, Iowa
A proposed youth sports complex could transform Dubuque’s riverfront and reinforce the island’s role as a community and regional gathering place, guided by RDG’s ongoing master planning work.
As part of an ongoing effort to enhance community amenities and support long-term economic development, the DRA — the nonprofit license holder for Dubuque, Iowa’s casinos — recently presented the findings of a sports complex feasibility study to the Dubuque City Council. The study outlines two primary concepts for a potential youth sports complex that would expand the existing ImOn Arena on Schmitt Island.
While not tied to any current funding commitments, the informational session sparked meaningful conversation among council members about the future of youth athletics in the region and the potential for a facility that elevates Dubuque’s position as a regional destination for sports and recreation. RDG Planning & Design has played a key role in this ongoing vision, leading the development of the Schmitt Island Master Plan and partnering with the DRA to explore how strategic investment in recreational infrastructure can drive economic growth and strengthen community identity.
“This kind of investment creates that ‘wow’ factor as you arrive on the island,” said RDG Architect and Senior Partner Tom Ohle, AIA. “It has the power to energize the community and serve as a catalyst for continued development on Schmitt Island.”
Consultants explored a variety of configurations before recommending an expansion that includes a large gymnasium complex with multiple courts and a second sheet of ice. The study reflects a growing demand for indoor sports such as figure skating, hockey, basketball, gymnastics, volleyball and competitive cheer.
“Funding is always the biggest challenge,” Ohle added. “It’s going to take a focused, committed team to bring this vision to life.”
