The Hawaii Catholic Herald highlights updates about the ongoing restoration of the Cathedral Basilica of Our Lady of Peace, carried out in partnership with RDG.

As updates continue on the restoration of the Cathedral Basilica of Our Lady of Peace in downtown Honolulu, the Hawaii Catholic Herald spotlighted the new marble altar that celebrates the cultural identity of Hawaii's eight major islands. Featuring colorful glass mosaics inspired by traditional Hawaiian quilt patterns, the altar is designed to complement the cathedral's historic architecture while reflecting the communities it serves.

As the oldest Catholic cathedral in continuous use in the United States, the Cathedral Basilica of Our Lady of Peace holds deep historical and cultural significance. RDG Planning & Design has partnered with the Diocese of Honolulu on the restoration since 2010, working alongside local firm Mason Architects and a team of specialized consultants to preserve the cathedral's 19th-century character while supporting its continued use as a place of worship.

The new altar is one of several carefully considered additions that balance historic preservation with contemporary liturgical needs. Crafted from Italian marble sourced from the same quarry as the cathedral's historic high altar, it incorporates eight glass mosaics representing the Hawaiian islands through their distinctive colors and natural symbols. The design reflects the broader restoration effort to honor the cathedral's architectural legacy and strengthen its connection to the people of Hawaii.

The cathedral's full rededication is anticipated in August 2027, marking another milestone in the ongoing effort to preserve this historic landmark for future generations.
