Iowa Architect Magazine's Fall 2025 issue highlights specialized places for high performance, including the Waukee CSD Natatorium designed by RDG.

Iowa Architect Magazine, the official publication of AIA Iowa, recently published its Fall 2025 issue, looking into the design behind “high-performance” places. The facilities highlighted, including the Waukee Community School District Natatorium, are dedicated to increasing human performance in a specific area or endeavor. RDG Planning & Design Architect and Partner Blane Perau, AIA, spoke with the magazine to offer insight into the vision behind the new natatorium.

At the new Waukee CSD Natarorium, water is both inspiration and infrastructure. Designed to serve the greater community and the swim programs of both Waukee high schools, the facility addresses a growing need for space and specialization. As participation increased, the previous facility became overcrowded and outdated. To support continued program growth and elevate performance, the district partnered with RDG to envision a purpose-built space shaped by the unique needs of its users and the sport it celebrates.

“This facility is shared, and the design challenge was to create a welcoming environment for Waukee High School, Waukee Northwest High School and the broader Waukee community,” said Perau. “All users have access to uniquely designed spaces that cater to their individual needs. The design prioritizes equal and immediate access to water, high-quality materials and overall space quality, resulting in a cohesive design that brings together a diverse group of users.”

Water defines both the function and the form of the natatorium. RDG drew inspiration from the movement of water to influence not just the interior flow but also the exterior expression of the building. “Graphic representations of an active water surface suggest the dynamic nature of the facility,” said Perau. “The exterior cladding moves away from traditional orthogonal constraints to subtly reinforce the concept of motion.” This thoughtful approach to design supports the needs of two growing swim programs while creating a space that welcomes and connects the broader community.
