RDG's Jonathan Martin and Eric Winkler discuss the future of North Idaho College's campus and its facilities.
Community members are helping shape the future of North Idaho College’s campus. As reported by the Coeur d’Alene/Post Falls Press, a dozen community members gathered Oct. 29, 2026, to share their perspectives on how the college’s campus and facilities can evolve to meet future needs. The discussion is part of an ongoing campus master planning process focused on aligning the college’s physical environment with its long-term goals.
Located in Coeur d'Alene, Idaho, North Idaho College has partnered with RDG Planning & Design to develop the college’s new campus master plan. The plan establishes a shared, long-term vision for the college’s campus, aligning its physical environment with institutional priorities. It also provides a framework for future investments that support student success and respond to evolving needs.
Representatives from RDG, including architects Nick Schulz, AIA, NCARB and Eric Winkler, AIA and landscape architects Jonathan Martin, PLA, ASLA and Emily Hemsath, joined North Idaho College staff and local community members to discuss opportunities for improving campus facilities and outdoor spaces. The discussion also addressed parking and campus access, with participants' input helping inform potential improvements as the master planning process moves forward.
"We heard a lot about the outdoors from students who want that connection to nature," said Winkler. "Students were really thinking about activities beyond their everyday school."
Martin echoed that sentiment, noting that community members expressed a desire to strengthen connections to the campus's natural surroundings. Educators also shared interest in opportunities to extend learning beyond traditional classrooms, including the possibility of holding classes outdoors.
As the campus master planning process moves forward, these conversations will help identify opportunities to create a more connected and welcoming campus environment. The insights gathered will inform a long-term vision that reflects the needs and aspirations of North Idaho College students, faculty and the broader community.
