Aquatics International features RDG's design for the Waukee Community School District’s state-of-the-art natatorium.

As one of the fastest-growing school districts in Iowa, Waukee Community School District envisioned a natatorium that could meet both present-day programming demands and future growth. Designed by RDG Planning & Design, the new facility delivers a premier aquatic experience that supports competitive athletics, community programming and learn-to-swim instruction.

At the heart of the natatorium is a 50-meter-by-25-yard competition pool with two movable bulkheads, allowing the space to be divided into two or three zones for simultaneous use. A smaller adjacent pool offers flexibility for training, warmups and instructional programs. RDG’s layout intentionally separates athlete and spectator entries to preserve competitive focus and streamline movement throughout the space.

To support both performance and well-being, the design team prioritized daylighting without glare. Step-ups in the ceiling with vertical glass panels diffuse natural light, allowing it to fill the room indirectly and support visibility without distracting swimmers. The facility also includes a multipurpose wet classroom accommodating wet and dry instruction, parties and events.

Outside, angled cladding and perforated aluminum panels reflect the dynamic motion of water, offering a visual identity that connects to the activity within.
