The Beltline Trail master plan and execution project transforms a decommissioned Missouri Pacific Railroad corridor into a safe and inspiring active transportation route through North Omaha, a community that such investments have historically underserved.

Rooted in equity, health and sustainability, the project addresses long-standing disparities in urban development by providing new opportunities for walking, biking and community gathering. In alignment with CDC research on the health benefits of trail infrastructure, the design promotes cardiovascular health, reduces air pollution and strengthens connections to schools, parks and local landmarks. More than a recreational amenity, the Beltline Trail represents a long-overdue commitment to equitable infrastructure that supports environmental well-being, social vitality and sustainable growth.   Developed collaboratively by RDG Planning & Design, Ehrhart Griffin & Associates and the Papio Missouri River Natural Resources District, the plan reflects years of community engagement and partnership. Stakeholders from neighborhood organizations, schools, local artists and the Malcolm X Memorial Foundation helped shape a vision that celebrates North Omaha's cultural identity while creating tangible pathways for investment and growth. As nearby properties have experienced new development and reinvestment inspired by the trail, the project has become a regional example of trail-oriented development. The trail illustrates how thoughtful planning, meaningful community engagement and strategic collaboration can transform disinvested corridors into valuable, enduring community assets.
