Seeking to create something wholly unique within its portfolio, The RiverWoods Group engaged RDG to design a new senior living community in Durham, New Hampshire. The resulting RiverWoods Durham Continuing Care Retirement Community is thoughtfully designed to support a lifestyle rich in social connection and physical and mental well-being.
RDG's process began with meaningful engagement of prospective residents, inviting them to share ideas and provide feedback early in the design process.
One notable outcome of these conversations was the integration of a traditional library, originally envisioned as a coffee shop, which has since become a vibrant, volunteer-run gathering space with a continually growing collection of books and resources.
On the second floor, a spacious dining area is carefully organized into smaller, more intimate settings through ceiling treatments, flooring changes and material transitions. These varied environments, which range from formal and casual to grab-and-go and private dining, encourage residents to connect before and after meals.
Inspired by the surrounding rustic landscape, RDG's interior design incorporates natural materials throughout, with stone and wood elements that create a hand-crafted, homey, yet modern atmosphere. The community includes 150 independent living apartments and a 72-bed health center offering assisted living, memory care and skilled nursing.
Resident amenities are designed to support an active, engaged lifestyle and include a creative art studio, multiple dining venues, a coffee bar and hearth room, a multimodal fitness center and a full-service salon.
