Rooted in a legacy of service and scholarship, this independent living expansion at University Place reimagines a beloved community for the next generation of residents.

Drawing inspiration from the nearby Purdue University campus and the client's philosophy of Living Joyfully, the design balances tradition with vibrant new energy. The result is a renewed environment that honors its architectural heritage while creating spaces that foster connection, wellness, and everyday moments of delight.

The project includes a 62-apartment independent living addition along with interior renovations to existing independent living corridors and shared amenities. In response to strong market demand for independent living, the expansion introduces new residences while enhancing community life through an elevated dining venue, a new bar and bistro, expanded community gathering spaces, and upgraded wellness amenities, including a pool and fitness center. The refreshed design will also be implemented in existing corridors as part of a 2026 capital improvement initiative.

Guided by the concept of "Collegiate Contemporary," the design builds upon the campus's existing architectural character with stone, stained glass and rich wood details, while introducing brighter materials and a playful color palette. Spaces were opened to create a more welcoming and energized arrival experience, anchored by a lively bar and bistro that serves as the community's social hub. Flexible gathering areas support Franciscan Ministries' "Celebrate Life and Serve with Joy" mission and its seven dimensions of wellness, allowing spaces to easily transition from quiet moments of reflection to lively social programming and celebrations.

The design also strengthens connections to nature and community through activated indoor-outdoor spaces. Expanded dining and wellness amenities open onto an outdoor courtyard that supports casual lounging and social interaction. Symbolic design elements like birds, sunbursts, and woven patterns appear throughout finishes and artwork, reflecting themes of connection, renewal and shared experience.

Guided by the client's stewardship values and the principles of Laudato Si', the project incorporates low- and no-VOC materials, recycled content and energy-efficient systems while thoughtfully integrating the addition within the existing campus. Repurposed stained-glass windows will also be reintroduced as architectural features, preserving a meaningful link to the community's history while giving these elements new life.
