RDG in the Media: Midlands Business Journal Highlights Marty Shukert
The "Fab 50," a profile series by the Midlands Business Journal showcases individuals shaping the business and nonprofit communities in the Omaha area.
In honor of its 50th anniversary, the Midlands Business Journal is publishing a “Fab 50” series highlighting individuals who have shaped local communities in Nebraska and Southwest Iowa. As part of the series, the publication spoke with RDG Urban Planner and Principal Marty Shukert, FAICP, about his many contributions to Omaha.
An Omaha native, Shukert was early fascinated with cities and how healthy, thriving neighborhoods can contribute to their success. As Omaha's Planning and Community Development Director in the 1980s, he led major downtown and neighborhood development projects, including the redevelopment of Omaha's riverfront and downtown housing programs.
Shukert joined RDG in 1989 and has since been a driving force behind numerous impactful projects across the city, including the North Omaha development plan, Park Avenue and the South Omaha Streetscape.
Shukert’s mastery of urban planning and his passion for improving cities have earned him multiple awards throughout his career: he was the first Nebraskan to be named a Fellow of the American Institute of Certified Planners and was awarded History Nebraska’s (formerly the Nebraska State Historical Society) first-ever Placemaker-Historymaker Award. Shukert has also received the 2019 MAPA Award of Merit and been named to the Commercial Real Estate, Nebraska Housing and Omaha Central High Halls of Fame.
