The Architect's Newspaper highlights RDG's design for the new Montana State University Student Wellness Center.

The Montana State University Student Wellness Center in Bozeman, Montana, is a future-focused, 190,000 SF facility designed to support the physical, mental and emotional well-being of the university’s students. Developed in collaboration with RDG Planning & Design and MMW Architects, the center offers a holistic response to evolving campus wellness needs.

Envisioned as a comprehensive destination, the design combines recreation, medical and counseling services under one roof. Interior spaces include a three-story climbing wall, bouldering caves, multipurpose courts, health and counseling suites, sensory rooms, flexible classrooms and more, all organized to promote privacy while fostering connection. The design uses transparency to its advantage through shading and glazing to balance daylight and heat. Glass walls connect inside and out. In contrast, interior glazing brightens counseling spaces with light and privacy.

RDG’s design leverages mass timber construction and integrates solar thermal walls, photovoltaic arrays and geothermal energy to enhance efficiency and reduce environmental impact. The illuminating vertical bands of wood add warmth to the space. Outdoor lounges and an adventure center extend programming beyond the building, inviting students to engage with the surrounding landscape.

Completed in 2025, the Student Wellness Center reflects Montana State University’s commitment to whole-person wellness. It stands as a model for integrating health, recreation and sustainability center that could serve the campus through 2040.
