The Learning Landscape: How Design Bridges Children and the Natural World

Nature isn’t just a backdrop — it’s a powerful learning tool. In this session presented by RDG Landscape Architect Anne Machican, we’ll explore how thoughtful design can connect young children to the natural world, supporting curiosity, well-being and development.

From windows that frame the changing seasons to outdoor classrooms and playgrounds that invite exploration, we’ll look at practical strategies architects and designers use to bring nature into early learning environments. Participants will leave with ideas to advocate for spaces that inspire wonder, foster inclusion and create meaningful daily experiences with the natural world.

Built to Belong: How Spaces Shape Inclusion in Early Learning

Inclusion in early education starts with the spaces where children learn, play, and grow. Classrooms, restrooms, playgrounds and community areas all shape belonging and access. This presentation by RDG Architect Molly Haas explores how intentional design — universally accessible play, flexible learning zones, cultural representation and sensory support — removes barriers and fosters participation.

Through practical examples, participants will see how small shifts in the built environment strengthen diversity, equity and inclusion. When viewed as an active partner in teaching and caregiving, the physical environment helps create spaces where all children and families feel welcomed, valued and able to thrive.
