The Iowa State Capitol, constructed from 1873 to 1884, is a source of great pride for generations of Iowans.  Following an initial study completed in 1981, RDG guided the restoration and rehabilitation of this Iowa icon, through multiple phases, over the course of nearly 40 years.

Badly deteriorating exterior sandstone elements are either resurfaced or replaced with color-matched limestone. All work was completed while the building was occupied. Installation of new energy-efficient wood windows that replicated the original window and replacement of the copper roof and skylights bring grandeur back to the structure. Other upgrades include door replacement, lighting, mechanical and ventilation systems, elevators, data and communication systems, fire sprinklers, life safety, landscaping and sidewalk replacement, handicap accessibility, and parking enhancements. This work prepares the building for future generations of Iowans.   Financial resources: State funding appropriations. Historic status: This property is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Historic architect (building): Cochrane & Piquenard (1871); Bell & Hackney (1884); Hallet & Rawson (1904) Historic architect (landscape): Jacob Weidenmann (1890): Emmanuel Louis Masquery (1912)
