St. Kilda Cafe is a remodeled, rehabilitated historic space, located in downtown Des Moines.

The space was once used as the building's loading dock and deemed historically significant, thus requiring that the design maintain the historic character. Selective demolition of only two non-bearing walls occurred, leaving the remaining 3,200 SF space unaltered and existing materials exposed. The Australian-style cafe features spaces for a coffee bar, seating and support areas.   The cafe's interior is realized in black and white accents with an added warmth of white oak surfaces. Such finishes, enhanced by the warm glow of artificial light, blurs the line between existing and new to create an atmosphere that aligns well with the owner's delivered product - simple and light, highly-crafted meals.
