Senior Housing News features RDG’s design for Brewster Place, showcasing how the renovation repositions the senior living community with updated amenities and a modern residential experience.

In late 2024, Senior Housing News named Brewster Place in Topeka, Kansas, the 2024 Best Building Renovation/Reposition winner in its annual Architecture & Design Awards. Now, the publication is exploring in greater detail how the senior living community underwent a transformation to meet 21st-century standards.

Leaders at Brewster Place worked with RDG Planning & Design and Simpson Construction Services to develop and implement a comprehensive renovation plan, adding new apartments, updating amenities and enhancing common spaces to create a more spacious, modern and comfortable environment for residents. Starting in 2022, the project team worked to update the community in multiple phases, allowing for construction costs to be covered over the renovation timeline. RDG's design for the space adds independent living units and a sixth floor with penthouse units and renovates existing units to include new amenities, finishes, ensuite bathrooms and open-concept floorplans.

The design also includes enhancements to the central kitchen and dining area, which introduce seating options for sit-down meals and grab-and-go dining. Additionally, the project features a new game room and lounge and relocates the community's arts and crafts studio to a more prominent and accessible location. Renovation work concluded in May 2024, transforming the project from its original 1960s design and repositioning the building as a premier residential community.
