Terrace Hill Mansion - Restoration & Rehabilitation
Des Moines, IA
Services provided on this project:
Architecture Overview:
Built in 1869, Terrace Hill has served as the Iowa Governor's residence, museum and host to official state functions since 1976. RDG's expertise in restoration design was valuable in introducing a sprinkler system into the historic fabric, updating the finishes in the Governor's apartment, and completing extensive work on the mechanical, electrical and data systems. Historic photographs and other sources were consulted on the exterior restoration phase, which included replacement of the distinctive polychromatic slate roof and copper gutters, fabrication of missing wood elements, and masonry repair and repointing. Work on the original Carriage House, now used as a visitor's center and offices, included masonry repair, a below-grade foundation drainage system and exterior woodwork repairs.
