This project involved significant community planning and preservation work to improve 17 different buildings and storefronts in the Winterset Courthouse Square Commercial Historic District in Madison County.
Preservation work was reviewed by the State Historic Preservation Office and The City of Winterset, and the project was funded in part with grants from the Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) Program. Over a 5-year span, the façades were returned to their historic appearance where possible with masonry repair, restoration of the upper or lower storefront windows and new canvas awnings and signage. The challenge in restoration is anticipating the unknown conditions hidden in these historic buildings, however this project is certain to jump-start investment in this classic Iowa community.
