RDG Planning & Design was recognized for work that raises the standard of the discipline and positively impacts communities.

The Nebraska/Dakotas Chapter of the American Society of Landscape Architects (ASLA Nebraska/Dakotas Chapter) has honored RDG Planning & Design with two 2022 ASLA Chapter Awards. This annual awards program honors individuals and organizations who demonstrate superior skill in the practice or study of landscape architecture and whose contributions have positively impacted the communities they serve. Awards categories include Design (Built), Design (Unbuilt), Planning and Analysis, Research, Communication and Residential (Built).

The two RDG projects recognized include the Nebraska Medicine – Durham Outpatient Center Rooftop Plaza (Award of Excellence, Design Built) and the University of North Dakota – University Avenue Streetscape (Honor Award, Design Built).

“The individuals who collaborated on these projects are passionate about impacting the communities they serve and we’re grateful that RDG was honored with two ASLA design awards,” said RDG Partner and Landscape Architect Bruce Niedermyer, PLA, ASLA, LEED AP. “We’re proud to share this recognition with our partners and communities and we’re thankful for their continued trust in RDG to elevate and make a difference in their quality of life.”

RDG’s design for the Nebraska Medicine – Durham Outpatient Center Rooftop Plaza establishes an intensive green roof, creating opportunities for a biodiverse demonstration of prairie environments. The rooftop plaza provides a space where staff, patients and visitors can interact with the outdoor environment and engages viewers in a thoughtful, artful plaza space. Additional design benefits include reduced overall stormwater runoff and noise, improved stormwater and air quality and urban heat island mitigation. The highest honor possible, its recognition with an ASLA Nebraska/Dakotas Chapter Award of Excellence establishes the project as a standard of excellence against which all landscape architects can measure performance.

The design team conceptualized light columns, representing a college on campus or icon of UND.

The University of North Dakota’s – University Avenue Streetscape renovation is the result of UND’s desire to enhance the first impression visitors have when they visit the campus. A one-mile stretch through the heart of campus, University Avenue was previously bleak, uninspired and difficult to navigate. RDG’s design for the $13 million renovation converts this road into a cherished asset for the campus and community, establishing a front door for the campus, improving safety and offering a durable structure, even during the cold North Dakota winter months.

The ASLA Nebraska/Dakotas Chapter unites Nebraska, North Dakota and South Dakota to expand the profession of landscape architecture throughout the region. Participation in the ASLA Nebraska/Dakota’s award program helps broaden professional boundaries, increases public awareness of the role of landscape architects, raises the standards of the discipline and brings recognition to organizations and individuals who demonstrate superior skill in the practice and study of landscape architecture.
