In response to multiple stakeholders, the City of Lincoln selected three teams to participate in a design competition for the intersection.Solutions were to address enhanced safety, increase capacity, minimize right-of-way impacts, be cost effective and multi-modal (vehicles, bicyclists, and pedestrians), incorporate sustainable elements, create an aesthetically pleasing gateway into southwest Lincoln, and provide pedestrian and trail connectivity.

East of the Missouri River, most public spaces, architecture and design are heavily influenced by Europe. It is here, in Nebraska, that we begin to see architecture and design that are uniquely American, perhaps best reflected in the Googie style of architecture.Since this intersection acts as a primary gateway to the capitol city of Nebraska, it is appropriate that we celebrate that which is American. The circles, car fin-inspired light fixtures, and free form tree sculptures all reflect that time period of automobile dominance and the architecture that reflects it.
