Cattermole
Library
Restoration &
Rehabilitation
Located within Fort Madison's historic central business district, the Cattermole Library was restored and rehabilitated for mixed-use purposes.
The 1893 Cattermole Library is the earliest extant instance in Iowa of local philanthropic support for a building designed exclusive as a public library. The rehabilitated structure includes commercial/retail space on the first floor and four market rate apartments on the second floor, boasting beautifully restored woodwork, windows and finishes throughout the structure. The Cattermole Memorial Library is an excellent example of a public building in the characteristic 1890's combination of the Loire chateau and Richardsonian Romanesque styles.
