RDG Knows Imaging
We’ve planned and designed spaces for over 130 imaging units, including X-ray, mammogram and MRI machines, CT, PET CT, Nuclear Medicine and interventional imaging equipment.
Imaging is vital to modern healthcare, offering critical insights for diagnosis, treatment planning and interventional procedures. New discoveries and technologies are constant. Ever-more-sensitive machines, complex tools and specialized processes give healthcare professionals incredible new methods to enhance patient outcomes.
We know that each imaging space must not only meet the precise requirements of the equipment it’s created for but also function well for staff and patient traffic flow, operational efficiency and patient safety and comfort. We work with our clients to articulate their project goals and ensure that we’re working toward those objectives at every step along the way.
The design of these spaces involves good communication and involvement from doctors, nurses, technicians, administrative leadership, engineers, and equipment manufacturers. At RDG, communication and involvement are a high priority – we work hard to ensure we hear from all the stakeholders early in the process and that all project participants are on the same page throughout the project.
When RDG Planning & Design is on a project, we know we’re in good hands. Their team brings a deep and nuanced understanding of healthcare environments, especially the complex and evolving needs of imaging spaces.
RDG’s Aaron Fulton and Will Downing, along with the University of Iowa’s John McKenzie, presented the session, “Square Pegs in Round Holes: Imaging Suite Solutions,” at the 2024 ASHE PDC Summit in San Diego, CA.

RDG's Approach to Imaging
Each project requires attention to details that are specific to imaging.
Patient Comfort
Patient comfort is primary. Design elements like enhanced patient privacy and ease of access, minimal required movement between spaces and pleasant, calming finishes, colors and other design elements to help make the patient experience as stress-free as possible.
Safety
Imaging projects have complex requirements such as shielding protocols and structural modifications to accommodate equipment size and weight. We make it our business to stay informed about state-of-the-art safety measures and changes in the regulatory environment.
Efficiency and Flexibility
Every design decision that enhances day-to-day staff efficiency – whether related to movement between spaces, supply locations or door placement helps the bottom line for the healthcare client. And we look for opportunities to build flexibility into the design of imaging spaces. With medical and technological advances happening at a record pace, it’s key to create thoughtful designs that can accommodate future changes.
Minimal Disruption
Most need to stay operational throughout the construction period. We work closely with owners and contractors to plan for minimal disruption to patients' ongoing care and ensure the space is up and running as soon as possible.
