Over the years, environmental science and computer technological advancements have changed the way architects weave sustainable practices into their designs. Architects now use a variety of modeling tools to make informed decisions based on real-time evaluations and help ensure a holistic approach to sustainability. The Cove.tool, for example, allows for real-time feedback on building performance analysis and operational carbon analysis, information teams can use to inform the design and documentation process throughout the life cycle of a project.
Though the tools to measure impact and success can be complex, sustainable design practices rooted in the belief that today should not sacrifice tomorrow offer a simple, straightforward approach, says RDG Planning & Design Partner and Architect Brent Wollenburg, AIA in the latest issue of iaArchitect. In combination with data collection and analysis, a strong commitment to the triple bottom line – that is, a focus on people, planet and purpose – can serve as a valuable guide in creating a holistic approach to sustainability.
