Architecture Overview:

Multiple programming efforts for Creighton University's School of Dentistry revealed several obstructions to the long-term continued use of the current facility, as well as constraints to the progress of curriculum and the capability of the School to capitalize on the potential for increased class size. Through analysis of the existing Boyne Building, Creighton University Medical Center, and three potential new building sites, evaluations revealed a need for the design of a new building. Utilizing virtual reality technology to verify the adequacy of spatial relationships within the facility before issuing the construction documents allowed the design team to provide virtual “walk-throughs” of the new building, confirming key spaces were appropriately designed and functionally correct. The four-level, state-of-the-art, 267-000-square-foot facility will allow the School to modestly expand enrollment, help recruit the best students, and recruit and retain the best dental faculty. The facility will have the capability to utilize telemedicine and active learning environments in addition to the traditional didactic teaching pedagogy. To be included are 138 adult clinic operatory chairs; 10 surgery and six acute care operatories with provision for 24/7 care services; 13 faculty practice operatories; and 15 pediatric/orthodontic operatories. The design positions the School to be the preeminent higher-educational facility for dental education in the country, further advancing the mission of Creighton University. Expected to be complete in August of 2018, the facility will utilize the most appropriate energy efficient mechanical, electrical and plumbing systems to reduce operating costs within budget parameters. Energy efficient glazing systems, an external sun screen, and a motorized sun shading device controlled by the building automation system will assist in maintaining a climate-controlled environment. The full basement is comprised of 43,000 square feet of enclosed structured parking for faculty, plus additional associated general/mechanical/electrical building infrastructure support spaces and facility/equipment storage needs.
