University of North Carolina Greensboro Leonard J. Kaplan Center for Wellness

Services provided on this project:

Architecture Overview:

Organized on three floor levels, this building provides five general categories of spaces: Gymnasia / Specialized Activity, Administration Office Suite, Personal Training Suite, Outdoor Adventures Suite, and Support Zone. The form of the building is driven by the functional organization of the spaces within. Spaces with high activity were generally designated to the north of the building to provide a view from the exterior that yields as much movement and transparency as possible. The "main concourse" (corridor) that internally connects all of the spaces on each level is open from floor to floor to provide views across the facility from level to level. Clerestory windows and taller roof over this area will bring desired natural light into this internal space.

Interior Design Overview:

The building form is driven by the functional organization of recreational spaces.  Areas with high activity are designated to the building’s northern side providing views from the exterior that yields a “see and be seen” philosophy. Driven by the facility size, a color blocking concept is carried throughout to help identify each area.  The Spartan Blue and Gold flood the main concourse and fitness areas, linked together by the wood ceilings. The crisscross design in the back paneling at the control desk, accent ceramic tiles, and subtle aluminum transition strips embedded in the terrazzo tie the design together.

Landscape Architecture Overview:

The site improvements at the Kaplan Center are both beautiful and hard working. A variety of hardscape materials and vegetation are arranged in a repetitive banding pattern that erodes as one travels to the east on the site into a pick-up-sticks pattern, that is clearly visible from the glass-enclosed cardio area. A demonstration rain garden located in the front of the facility works to slow and filter rainwater and runoff before it enters the storm system.
