The City of Columbus was facing many housing market challenges post-pandemic. These included increased remote work at several of their large employers, including Cummins Corporation. The city was also beginning to see disinvestment in the historic housing stock because of cost of living increases. While the City was working to revise codes to allow mixed-uses and various housing types, RDG was retained to help fully understand future market and unit needs.

RDG led a comprehensive process that included two town halls with the community to identify a select number of focused housing strategies under seven overall housing goals. The goals provide Columbus with the roadmap to help achieve the 302 units needed annually to keep up with demand through 2030. Immediately following acceptance of the housing study, the city immediately retained RDG to hold an implementation workshop with staff to allocate funds to the strategies.
