Each year, we open our doors to a new group of summer interns who work alongside professionals in various disciplines and across multiple markets, learning directly from seasoned practitioners and getting hands-on project experience. 

We’re currently looking for an intern to join our lighting design team this summer and support work that helps transform places across the Midwest.

Ever notice how the right light can transform a space? If you’re a student of lighting design, then you’ve definitely noticed. Lighting has the power to affect how a space looks, feels and functions, and RDG’s lighting designers work daily to create solutions that enhance the visual environment and set the atmosphere of a space.

As a lighting design intern, you’ll have the opportunity to work closely with experienced professionals and focus on a variety of project types. Along the way, you'll hone your skills and contribute to work that enriches environments and enhances the user experience.

Essential Job Functions

  • Collaborate with design professionals, clients and the public in a creative environment and on a broad range of unique projects

  • Actively contribute to all phases of the design process, including programming, site analysis, schematic design, systems coordination, code research, design development, construction documents, product research, document coordination and construction observation

  • Generate 3D computer models, still images and animations, helping clients understand the design

Skills and Strengths

  • High level of design competence

  • Excellent problem-solving skills

  • Able to effectively communicate design ideas and solutions to partners and clients

  • Proficient in Revit, Rhino/SketchUp, Adobe Illustrator/Photoshop and Microsoft Office applications

  • Solid verbal and graphic presentation skills

Education and Experience

  • Pursuing a bachelor’s degree in architecture, engineering, interior design, technical theater or a related field

  • Completion of Lighting 101 or related course preferred
